Short interest is the total number of shares that have been sold short and not yet covered. It is reported by broker-dealers to FINRA and published twice monthly. Comparing short interest to a stock's float (short % of float) shows how heavily a stock is being bet against.

Cost to borrow (or borrow rate) is the annualized fee short sellers pay to borrow shares. High or rising borrow fees indicate scarce share supply and strong shorting demand, a key ingredient in short squeezes.
